CONSTRUCTION

INTERIOR DESIGN: Mary Ann Stevens. Inc. Interior Designer, Fredericton
GENERAL CONTRACT: Rocca Construction  
TOTAL CAPITAL COST: $9.3 Million  
FUNDING: Provided through The Saint John 1985 Canada Summer Games Society, Inc. which was funded by the three levels of government for all capital costs of the 1985 Canada Summer Games, supplemented by private and corporate donations.  
 

BUILDING FEATURES

GROSS FLOOR AREA:   5.220 m2 (56.200 ft2)
EXTERIOR:  Red brick to match Market Square.
STRUCTURE:
  Poured-in-place concrete columns.
  Poured-in-place concrete floor slabs.
  Steel columns and trusses used in competition pool.  
  Open web steel joists and steel decking for room assemblies.  
ROOF:  Sloped - standing seam steel panels.  
ROOF:  Flat - over competition pool rubberized membrane roof over metal
deck and insulation.  
 

LEVEL 1:  MAINTENANCE AREA

Staff and service access, maintenance staff accommodation, filter room, boiler room, and associated storage area.

LEVEL 2:  POOL AREA  

COMPETITION POOL  

LENGTH: 51 meters with a 1 meter movable bulkhead.  
WIDTH: 18.3 meters; accommodates 8 swimming lanes.  
WATER DEPTHS: 1.097 meters (3 ft, 6 in) in shallow end to 4.26 meters (14 ft) in    
deep end.  
WATER CAPACITY:  556.000 U.S gallons  
DIVING FACILITIES: Two one-meter springboards; two three-meter springboards; one five-meter  
diving platform.  
FILTRATION SYSTEM: Competitive tank has its own filtration system, continuous
circulation flow to purify water.  
TIMING SYSTEM: Colorado timing system capable of scoring swimming, diving, water
polo, and synchronized swimming.  
SPECTATOR SEATING: Canada Games 1400, Post Games 500
 
LEISURE POOL AREA

TOTS POOL: Water depth is 12 to 18 inches surrounded by a plexiglass fence and a water despensing tree.
LEISURE POOLS: Two leisure pools interconnected. Depth 3 ft to 4.5 ft. 25 meters in
length. Upper pool water overflows into lower pool, creating a water fall effect. Spiral slide from “Teen Island” into lower pool.  
WHIRLPOOLS: There are two whirlpools; one for families the other for adults.  
 
The tots pool, leisure pools, and whirlpools have a separate filtration system from the competition pool. The advantage of this is that if the competition pool is shut down for maintenance or some other reason, programming can continue in the leisure area or vice versa.  

Adjacent to the leisure pool area is the public dry and steam saunas.

CHANGE FACILITIES:  Men’s and women’s locker rooms, showers, and grooming areas. New family change hut and off-deck bathroom facilities were added in 1998.  
 

LEVEL 3: PUBLIC ACCESS  

LOBBY:  Primary control area. Reception desk. Access to locker room and public areas.  
ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE:  Off lobby and pool area.  
SPORTS MEDICINE CLINIC:  In-house physiotherapy/rehabilitation clinic run by a private practitioner.  MULTIPURPOSE ROOM:  Designed for fitness classes, large meetings, dances etc. Folding partition to divide room in half.  
FITNESS CLUB:  Extensive resistance training, cardiovascular training, fitness centre and appraisal/counseling area.  
LOWER PEDWAY:  Administrative offices, lecture rooms, two small lecture facilities for small group instruction meeting.  
 
 
ACCOMMODATION FOR HANDICAPPED

 

Exterior access to Aquatic Centre is ramped

Ramp access throughout main building level

Paraplegic change facilities in men’s and women’s locker rooms

Leisure pool has graduated steps to both levels. Portable access

chair is available for pool.  

Handicap change room on deck level. Donated by McDonald’s foundation

 

 
ACCESS TO SHOPPING AREAS  

Indoor pedway access to the Shoppes of City Hall, Market Square and Brunswick Square.
