The Pool - Canada Games Aquatic Centre

Learn-to-Swim Class Descriptions

Parent & Child Classes (up to 3 Years)

Parent & Child 1 (12-18 months of age) - This class focuses on parent and child becoming comfortable together in the water

Parent & Child 2 (18-24 months of age) - This class focuses on kicking, splashing, blowing bubbles, and assisted floats

Parent & Child 3 (24-30 months of age) - Introductory swim skills including floats and glides, use of PFD for more independent swimming and submersion are covered

Parent & Child 4 (30-36 months of age) -Many challenging skills are taught at this level such as rollover swims, independent pool entry & exit, and survival skills.

 

Preschool Classes The Nautical Swim Program (3-6 Years)

Recruits - Allows young children to become comfortable in the water, learn to get their faces wet, blow bubbles and submerge. (Held in Tots Pool.)

Ensigns - The focus of this level is to introduce underwater skills. (Children must be 38 inches tall for the Upper Leisure pool)

Lieutenants - Children learn front floats, front glides and front glides with kicks.

Commanders - Building skills in back floats, glides and kicks as well as front swim.

Captains -Provides an introduction to rollover glides, side glides with kicks and greater distance for back/front swims.

Commodores - Continued development of front, and back swims. An introduction to deep water activities and a distance swim of 15m.

Admirals - Introduction to front crawl and front dives as well as a distance swim of 20m.

 

Red Cross Swimkids (6 Years and Over)

Swim kids 1- An entry level program for children ready to move in shallow water. An orientation to the water and the pool area. An introduction to floats and glides with kicks.

Swim Kids 2 - Helping the child build skills in front and back swims. An introduction to deep water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Endurance is built with flutter kicking with assisted glides.

Swim Kids 3 - This level provides an introduction to front crawl as well as the foundation for making wise choices on where and when to swim. Diving introduced and children will work on floats and changing direction. Endurance is achieved by building strength in flutter kick and a 15 m swim.

Swim Kids 4 - The front crawl, back glides and shoulder roll for back crawl are further developed. Children work on kneeling dives, surface support and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25 m swim.

Swim Kids 5 - Back crawl is introduced, along with sculling skills and whip kick on the back. Children try stride drives and receive an introduction to safe boating skills. Endurance is developed through dolphin kick and a 50 m swim.

Swim Kids 6 - Front and back crawl continue to be refined as the elementary back stroke is introduced. Children are also introduced to safety on ice, elementary rescue of others with throwing assists, treading water and front dive. Endurance is built with a 75 m swim.

Swim Kids 7 - This level continues to build skills and endurance for the front crawl, back and elementary back stroke and introduces whip kick on the front. Children learn about airway and breathing obstructions and participate in timed treading for endurance as well as 150 m swim.

Swim Kids 8 - Level 8 provides an introduction to breaststroke, foot first surface dives and rescue entries. Children learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia and performing rescue breathing on children and adults. Endurance is built on the dolphin kick and 300 m swim.

Swim Kids 9 - Front and back crawl as well as elementary back stroke and breast stroke continue to be refined. Children are encouraged to try combining different strokes and kicks for fitness. They work on head first shallow dives and standing dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self rescue from ice. Endurance is built from a 400 m swim.

Swim Kids 10 - Further refinement of strokes continues with an introduction to butterfly and scissor kick as a warm up /cool down for fitness. Children learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head and feet first surface dives. Endurance is built with dolphin kick and butterfly drills and a 500 m swim.

 

Learn-to-Swim Program's for Teen and Adults

Red Cross Teen Basics - offers older youth (13-17) the opportunity to learn to swim at their  level without the discomfort of joining a class with younger children.

Red Cross Teen Strokes -  for 13-17 year old who can already swim front crawl and back crawl  15m. and are comfortable in deep water. Swimmers choose the stroke(s) they wish to focus on.

Red Cross Adult Basics - a program designed to help adults learn to swim.

Red Cross Adult Strokes - for adults who can already swim front crawl and back crawl 15m and are comfortable in deep water. Swimmers choose the stroke(s) they wish to focus on. Participation based program with individual goals.
